Enjoying the World's Greatest Harbor 'SAIL OUT'
Editor Dallas Sherringham on the leaving of Sydney
When I sail out of Sydney it is a time of mixed emotions for me. I have sailed out with travel writing colleagues, friends and loved ones who laughed and cheered and thrilled to the big event in their lives, but they are gone now. I also think about my late Uncle who was in the American Navy in the Pacific in WW2 after he helped build the Harbour Bridge. The journey to Manly = 'A Million Miles From Care' - by the steamer South Steyne as a young kid from the country. And reading Kennenth Slessor's Five Bells for the first time.
The journey past that still amazing Bridge, Luna Park, the Prime Minister's residence the unique Opera House- once despised but now loved, the beautiful gardens, Fort Denison- built to thrash the Russian fleet, Taronga Park Zoo, Garden Island Naval base with its daunting grey sentinnels to keep us safe, the rich and famous homes of the sometimes pretentious posers of the Eastern Bays and finally, Manly to our left - place of beauty, place of dreamy famiy holidays from the country. place where Mighty steam powered ferries roared into the wharf in a surging rush of water and a clanging of bells. Couldn't they have save just one for old times sake?.
We glide through the Heads that Cook ignored, the Pilot Boat chasing the massive ship like a Fox Terrier after a car.
We suddenly bounce into waves......Sydney has released us, the course is North East to Noumea
