The making of an Icon of the Ocean by Royal Caribbean Cruises
Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas has returned from the Baltic Sea to the Meyer Turku shipyard – where it’s currently under construction – after successfull completing its initial round of sea trials to test its performance, latest technologies and equipment.
More than 450 workers onboard carried out crucial, preliminary assessments with Icon’s main engines, hull, lifeboats and thrusters, among others, covering an extensive check list of key technical areas. Between preparations and the trials, the journey to bring Icon to this milestone involved over 2,000 specialists, hundreds of nautical miles traveled and more than 350 hours of work. Next up will be a second round of sea trials later this year, which will be when the first Icon Class ship is pushed to its limits ahead of its debut in Miami in January 2024.
