Luganville, Santo - Legendary Home of 'South Pacific'
TRACING THE WAR FROM P&O PACIFIC ADVENTURE
I had a day on Espiritu Santo looking at the WW2 sites organised by Sarah of Santo Tourism. Santo is where James A Michener wrote the book that became South Pacific, the movie and musical. It has taken quite a while for Santo to rediscover its unusual WW2 heritage and its potential. More than 500.000 American men and women served on Santo and if you multiply that by the generations from each service person since, it is a massive potential audience much like young Australia's rediscovery of Anzac. They are now building a world class war museum in Luganville. Santo was on the front line in WW2 with bombers and P38 fighters attacking Guadalcanal daily. The Americans literally built a city the size of Canberra in six months. The highlight of our tour was Million Dollar Point which was the dumping site of all the left over equipment. It is now a popular swimming and snorkelling spot. Coming soon a very special & famous Santo story close to my heartand a full review of the island. Million Dollar Point |
